We have often noticed the shoppers inside a hardware shop , struggling to find the right door hardware and quite often the query is , “ What does it mean for a door handle to be handed “. It is very important to know about handings so that you do not end up buying a handle that turns in the wrong direction !
The good news is that you do not really have to be technical to know this . The quick and easiest way to determine is , notice the location of the hinges on the door . On the interior door , you will stand on the side where you enter. Then notice where the hinges are on the door frame . If the hinges are on the left hand side , it is a left handed door and if they are on the right , you need a right handed door . For the front door , if it is a left handed style , the inside handle should be pointed to the right and this will be the opposite for a right handed door , with the inside handle pointed to the left .
This system is prevalent in most European countries
